If you don’t have time for a full spa weekend, Bulgaria makes it easy to plan a thermal spa day without an overnight stay. Velingrad, Sapareva Banya and Hisarya all work well for this kind of trip, but the experience is quite different in each place. One stands out for its wide choice of spa complexes, another for its hot mineral pools and proximity to Sofia, while the third is ideal for combining thermal pools with a walk through a historic town.
Below, we compare these three popular thermal spa destinations not by the number of pools, but by what actually matters on a day trip: distance from Sofia, day pass prices, the type of relaxation on offer, access to a spa without staying overnight, and what else you can do for a few hours away from the pools.

Velingrad, Sapareva Banya or Hisarya: what to choose
All three resorts work well for a one-day trip, but they suit slightly different scenarios. Velingrad is the better choice if you want to spend most of the day inside a modern spa complex and make the most of its pools and relaxation areas. Sapareva Banya wins on proximity to Sofia and pairs well with a walk in the Rila Mountains. Hisarya is more appealing if you want to split the day between mineral pools, parks and ancient heritage.

When it comes to travel time, Sapareva Banya has a clear advantage, especially if you are planning a one-day trip specifically.
When comparing prices, keep in mind that a day pass usually applies to a specific complex rather than to the resort as a whole. In Velingrad, many large spa hotels include pools and spa facilities in the accommodation price, so separate day access is not available everywhere. In Sapareva Banya and Hisarya, it is easier to find pools that can be visited independently.
Velingrad: a full spa day

Velingrad is the most obvious choice if the main purpose of your trip is the spa itself. Bulgaria’s Ministry of Tourism describes Velingrad’s thermal-mineral deposit as the largest in the country, while the town is officially recognised as one of Bulgaria’s major balneological and spa destinations.
The town has many hotels with large pool and relaxation areas, making it particularly pleasant to spend several hours in a single complex. This is less about simply visiting a hot spring and more about enjoying a full day of relaxation with pools, jacuzzis, saunas, steam rooms and relaxation areas.
For a visit without accommodation, one convenient option is SPA Hotel Elbrus thermal aqua park. For non-hotel guests, a full-day pass costs €9 for adults and €6 for children up to 14 years old. From 14:00 to 19:00, Monday to Thursday, the rate is €6 for adults and €3 for children. Children up to 100 cm tall enter free of charge. The price includes mineral pools, a children’s area, slides, jacuzzis, sun loungers and changing rooms.
Still, don’t focus on just one complex. Velingrad’s main advantage is the choice available: it is much easier to find a spa that matches your preferred type of relaxation, from a large water park to a hotel complex focused on saunas, massages and treatments.
Who is Velingrad best for?
- Those who want to spend most of the day at a spa.
- Those who care about more than pools and also want saunas, steam rooms, jacuzzis and relaxation areas.
- Families looking for children’s pools and water entertainment.
- Those who prefer a wide choice of spa complexes rather than one specific thermal facility.
The main drawback for a day trip from Sofia is the distance. The drive is 134 km each way, or 268 km round trip. That is reasonable for a full spa day, but the trip becomes less worthwhile if you only plan to spend two or three hours in the pools.
Keep in mind that Velingrad also has sanatoriums offering medical treatment.
Sapareva Banya: the thermal spa closest to Sofia

If you are looking for a thermal spa day from Sofia, Sapareva Banya is the most practical option. The town is 73 km away and takes about an hour to reach by car. The resort is known for its hot mineral waters and the geyser in the town centre.
Sapareva Banya’s main advantage is that you can combine the pools with other experiences. After the thermal pools, you can walk around town, see the geyser fountain or continue towards the Rila Mountains. The resort is particularly well suited to travellers who would find it boring to spend the whole day at a spa.
One of the best-known places is Aqua Club Kotvata. On weekdays, a day pass costs €15 for adults and children over 120 cm tall, and €8 for children aged 3 and over up to 120 cm tall. On weekends and public holidays, a full-day ticket costs €20 for adults and €10 for children. After 15:00 on weekdays, the adult rate is €10.
Kotvata is particularly convenient for an independent visit without accommodation. The complex has several outdoor pools, jacuzzis and children’s areas, as well as an indoor pool and spa services. The combined ticket providing access to the indoor and outdoor pools and the Jala Spa Centre is listed on the complex’s website at €41.
This makes Sapareva Banya suitable both for an inexpensive short visit to the pools and for a full spa day. If you leave Sofia in the morning, it is easier to keep part of the day free for a walk or a natural attraction.
Who is Sapareva Banya best for?
- Those travelling from Sofia who want to minimise time on the road.
- Those who need a day pass without accommodation.
- Those who want to combine a spa visit with the Rila Mountains.
- Families with children who value outdoor pools and water entertainment.
- Those who prefer an independent trip rather than staying inside a hotel complex.
Hisarya: thermal pools plus history

Hisarya stands out from the other two resorts by combining mineral pools, parks and historic attractions. The town has 22 mineral springs with different temperatures and water compositions, and Hisarya has the status of a national and international balneological resort!
This makes it particularly easy to plan a day around the “pools + walk” format. After several hours at the spa, you can stroll through the town park, see the Roman walls and the Southern Gate of the fortress, or visit the archaeological museum. The combination of thermal and cultural activities is Hisarya’s main advantage over more specialised spa resorts.
For a full day around the pools, consider Terme di Hissar mineral complex. A full-day pass for an adult or a child over 140 cm tall costs €17 from Monday to Thursday and €22 from Friday to Sunday. A half-day ticket from 14:00 to 18:00 costs €15 and €18 respectively.
The price includes outdoor mineral pools, including children’s areas, a large relaxation pool and a sports pool. The ticket also provides access to the Relaxation Zone with a sauna, steam room, salt room and indoor pool. Food at the complex’s restaurants is not included.
Another option is the municipal Momina Banya mineral bath. It is located in the park of the same name and is open from 08:00 to 19:00 in winter and until 20:00 in spring, summer and autumn.
Who is Hisarya best for?
- Those who want to combine thermal pools with a walk and historic attractions.
- Those who need a full-day ticket at a mineral complex.
- Couples looking for a relaxed type of getaway without a focus on water attractions.
- Those who want to spend part of the day at a spa and the rest exploring the town.
How much does a day pass cost?
For an independent trip without accommodation, the price difference is noticeable. At the same time, these rates apply to specific complexes, so they should not be treated as a single price for each resort.

In terms of entry price, Velingrad currently looks the most affordable, but it is important to consider the restrictions for non-hotel guests. In Sapareva Banya, the day pass is more expensive, but access to the pools is specifically organised for independent visitors. In Hisarya, the full-day rate is higher, but at Terme di Hissar the price includes not only the outdoor pools but also the Relaxation Zone with several types of steam rooms and saunas.
Comparing the ticket price alone is not quite fair. For a day trip, the total cost of the day matters more: travel, entry, food and additional services. If a spa complex is farther away, a cheap ticket does not necessarily make the trip better value.
Where is a spa without a hotel stay easiest?
The resorts differ considerably when it comes to visiting without accommodation. In Sapareva Banya, independent day access is well established: Kotvata sells separate pool tickets, including full-day and evening rates.
Hisarya also offers day visits. Terme di Hissar publishes separate full-day and half-day rates, with access to the Relaxation Zone already included in the ticket. This makes the resort a good choice for anyone who wants a proper spa day without booking a room.
Velingrad is different: large hotels often structure their offers around accommodation, with spa access included in the package. Separate entry for external visitors is available, but it depends on the individual property. SPA Hotel Elbrus offers it, although outside guests can visit only when there is availability and after advance reservation.

Where to go with kids

For a family trip, Sapareva Banya and Velingrad are the first places to consider. Kotvata has separate children’s rates, pools and water areas, while the day pass lets you spend several hours on site without being tied to hotel accommodation.
Velingrad is also a good option for families, especially if you choose a complex with a children’s pool and water attractions. For example, the Thermal Aqua Park Elbrus day pass includes a children’s pool, a mineral pool with slides and water attractions.
Where to go in winter
In winter, the best format is one where most of the day is spent in an indoor spa area or in hot outdoor pools. Velingrad and Sapareva Banya both have strong points here: at either resort, you can build the day around mineral water and spa facilities.
Choose Velingrad if the weather is not suitable for long walks. A large spa complex lets you spend almost the entire day inside one property. Sapareva Banya is more appealing on a sunny winter day, when you may want to walk around town a little or enjoy views of the Rila Mountains after the pools.
Hisarya also works well for a thermal day in winter, especially if you choose a complex with an indoor pool. At Terme di Hissar, the entry ticket includes the Relaxation Zone with an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and salt room.
Where to go in summer
In summer, the priorities change. Outdoor pools become more important than spa areas, and after swimming you may want to add a walk, restaurant or natural attraction to the itinerary.
Sapareva Banya is particularly convenient for this type of trip: you can spend several hours in the pools in the morning, head towards the Rila Mountains after lunch or leave time for a walk around town. For a short trip from Sofia, this is the most compact route.
Hisarya is a good choice for a relaxed summer day. After the pools, you can walk through the parks and explore the town’s Roman heritage. The municipality specifically highlights the combination of mineral waters and cultural and historical heritage as one of the distinctive features of Hisarya’s tourism offer.
Velingrad is the better choice if you want a resort-style getaway with plenty of water and spa options. In summer, complexes with outdoor mineral pools are particularly appealing, although their operating conditions depend on the individual property.
How to spend one day
For a one-day trip, don’t try to fit too many attractions into the itinerary. The biggest mistake is spending most of the day travelling between several places and leaving only two hours for the thermal pools. It is better to choose one main spa complex and one additional activity.
Velingrad day plan
This schedule makes sense when you choose a complex that accepts external visitors. If a particular property requires advance reservation, it is better to arrange it before setting off.
Sapareva Banya day plan
This itinerary shows Sapareva Banya’s main advantage particularly well: even on a one-day trip, there is enough time for more than just the pools. The distance from Sofia is 73 km.
Hisarya day plan
Hisarya requires more time on the road, so travelling there solely for two hours in the pools is not particularly worthwhile. On a full-day trip, however, the town gives you an additional reason to go: mineral springs, parks, fortress walls and archaeological sites.
Which thermal resort should you choose?
If you put aside the universal question of which resort is “best”, the answer depends on how exactly you want to spend the day.
