The Bulgarian Black Sea coast is suitable for many different types of holidays, from large resorts with extensive infrastructure to small beaches near nature reserves. At the same time, sand remains one of the main features of the local coastline. In the north and south of the country, you will find long, wide beaches, small bays, dunes and almost wild stretches of coast.
The quality of bathing water along the Bulgarian coast has been rated quite highly in recent years. According to data from the European Environment Agency for 2026, 96.9% of bathing sites in Bulgaria received an “excellent” rating. This refers specifically to bathing water quality rather than an overall assessment of a particular beach.
This article covers popular sandy beaches in Bulgaria, from Sunny Beach and Golden Sands to smaller destinations such as Arkutino, Krapets and Bolata. For convenience, we have grouped them by the type of holiday they suit and added a table with their main features, information about the Blue Flag, beach equipment prices and proximity to airports.

Sandy beaches in Bulgaria for holidays with children

For a family holiday, it is not just the colour and quality of the sand that matter. The depth near the shore, the type of seabed, the presence of lifeguards and sanitary facilities, and the ability to quickly reach a café, shop or accommodation are all important.
If you are looking for a classic resort holiday, Albena, Kranevo, Obzor, Ravda, Sunny Beach and some of the beaches in Nessebar are worth considering first. For a more relaxed holiday, Duni or some parts of Primorsko can be a good choice.
Wild beaches such as Bolata, Krapets, Arkutino and the Pomorie Sandspit are interesting for completely different reasons. They have less development and more natural surroundings, but infrastructure may be limited or absent. They are therefore better suited to independent trips rather than as a substitute for a full-service family resort.
What does the Blue Flag mean on Bulgarian beaches?

The Blue Flag is an international environmental programme that takes into account more than just seawater quality. Its criteria include environmental management, visitor information, safety, services and infrastructure, environmental education and accessibility.
The number of awarded beaches changes from year to year. In the 2026 season, Bulgaria received 26 Blue Flags for beaches and another 6 for marinas. The list included, among others, Albena, Golden Sands, Kranevo Central, Obzor Central, Sunny Beach, Nessebar South, Pomorie East, Central and Harmani in Sozopol, Duni, Arkutino and Butamyata.
For this reason, the presence of a Blue Flag in this article should be understood as a characteristic of a particular season. The absence of an award does not mean that a beach is dirty or inconvenient: the programme is voluntary and covers only part of the coastline.
Sandy beaches and resorts in Bulgaria
Sunny Beach

Sunny Beach is the largest and one of the best-known seaside resorts in Bulgaria. It is located 30 km from Burgas and 100 km from Varna. The resort is close to Nessebar, so it is easy to combine a beach holiday here with a trip to the old town.
The beach stretches for approximately 8 km. It has fine golden sand, wide sections of shoreline and plenty of beach facilities. The beach is divided into North, Central and South sections, and all three received the Blue Flag in 2026.
Sunny Beach is suitable for those who do not want to limit their holiday to the sea. Restaurants, bars, clubs, shops and water sports centres operate throughout the resort. The beach also offers boat trips and various water activities.
At the same time, the resort is very large and lively. The central area can become crowded during the high season, while nightlife has a noticeable effect on the atmosphere in some parts of the resort. For a quieter holiday, it is better to choose accommodation away from the noisiest areas.
For families with children, areas with a gently sloping entrance into the water are particularly interesting. However, conditions vary between sections of the beach, so the entire eight-kilometre coastline should not be treated as completely uniform.
Beach equipment prices also vary. For example, in 2026 the Ministry of Tourism lists €5.11 for an umbrella and €5.11 for a sun lounger on the Central Beach, while on the North Beach each costs €4.60.
Golden Sands

Golden Sands is located 18 km from the centre of Varna and next to the protected area of the same name. It is one of the largest resorts on Bulgaria’s northern coast.
The resort’s main attraction is its long, wide beach with fine golden sand. The beach stretches for almost 3.5 km, while some sections are particularly wide.
The resort has extensive tourist infrastructure, including cafés, restaurants, shops, entertainment venues and water sports facilities. Some areas become quite noisy in the evening, so when choosing a hotel, it is worth considering its location relative to the central part of the resort.
Golden Sands has the Blue Flag in 2026. The beach is suitable for different types of holidays, but the seabed and swimming conditions can vary between sections. For small children, it is better to choose a spot with a convenient, gently sloping entrance to the water. An umbrella costs €6 and a sun lounger also costs €6.
Albena

Albena is located 40 km from Varna Airport and combines resort infrastructure with natural surroundings. The Baltata Nature Reserve is nearby, while green areas begin directly behind the beach.
Albena Beach is known for its fine golden sand, considerable width and gently sloping entrance to the sea. For families with children, it is one of the most convenient options on the northern coast, especially if proximity to hotels and developed infrastructure is important.
The beach has changing rooms, showers, toilets, lifeguard stations, cafés and areas where beach equipment can be rented. An umbrella and a sun lounger each cost €3.58. The resort also offers plenty of entertainment for children and adults. Albena received the Blue Flag in 2026.
Albena is not limited to beach holidays. There are nature trails nearby, while the resort itself has sports facilities, entertainment and family activities.
Kranevo

Kranevo is located between Albena and Golden Sands. It is a more compact resort that is often chosen for a quiet family holiday and because of its proximity to the major resorts of the northern coast.
There is a long sandy beach with a relatively gently sloping entrance to the sea. The coast has paid areas with sun loungers and umbrellas, showers, toilets and other basic facilities.
In 2026, two Kranevo beaches received the Blue Flag – North and Central. The Central Beach received the award for the first time.
Kranevo is convenient for trips to Albena and Golden Sands. At the same time, its atmosphere is noticeably quieter than that of its larger neighbours.
Obzor

Obzor is located between Varna and Burgas, so it is often chosen as a compromise between the northern and southern coasts. The resort stretches along a large bay and is known for its long sandy coastline.
Obzor Central Beach has around 6 km of fine sand. The southern section leads towards quieter natural areas, while cafés, restaurants, shops and accommodation are located close to the shore in the town itself.
The beach is suitable for families thanks to its gently sloping entrance to the sea and considerable length. At the same time, Obzor is not as large or noisy as Sunny Beach. Obzor Central Beach received the Blue Flag in 2026. An umbrella and a sun lounger each cost €4.09.
Nessebar

Nessebar is interesting because a beach holiday here can easily be combined with a visit to one of Bulgaria’s best-known historic towns. The Old Town is located on a peninsula, while the main sandy beaches are in the newer part of the resort and nearby.
Nessebar South Beach is one of the main swimming areas. It has golden sand, beach facilities and convenient access to the water. In 2026, the South Beach received the Blue Flag.
There are cafés, restaurants and water sports rental points nearby. Nessebar itself makes it easy to diversify a beach day with walks around the Old Town, museums and historical sights.
Another advantage is its proximity to Sunny Beach and Ravda. If you wish, you can use the beaches of several resorts during the same trip.
Ravda

Ravda is located approximately 4 km from Nessebar and 33 km from Burgas. Despite its proximity to major resorts, it is a quieter destination that is particularly popular with families.
The coastline is divided by Cape Ravda. South Beach is known for its sand, sea and water sports opportunities, while the northern sections are suitable for those who prefer a quieter setting.
Ravda has family hotels, apartments, cafés and restaurants. Another advantage is the ability to reach Nessebar and Sunny Beach quickly and make use of their infrastructure.
In 2026, the Ministry of Tourism lists a price of €5 for an umbrella and €5 for a sun lounger on Ravda Central Beach.
Primorsko

Primorsko is known for its two large beaches – North and South. The town is located between them, while forests, dunes and natural areas surround the resort.
South Beach is better suited to a classic family holiday, with plenty of cafés, accommodation and resort facilities nearby. North Beach is more interesting for those who prefer a more spacious shoreline and natural surroundings.
Primorsko is also convenient for nature lovers. The Ropotamo Nature Reserve is nearby, while dunes and rare vegetation have been preserved in the Arkutino area.
Duni

Duni is a resort on the southern coast known for its sandy beaches, dunes and forest. There is less urban development here than at large mass-market resorts, while most of the accommodation consists of large resort complexes. The beach area is suitable for relaxed holidays and family trips. Some locations offer opportunities for water sports, while the natural surroundings make Duni interesting for more than just swimming.
In 2026, the Duni and Duni South beaches received the Blue Flag. It is a notable example of a resort where a sandy coastline combines with a natural landscape.
Duni is 40 km from Burgas. The resort is best suited to those who want to stay in a hotel complex and spend most of their holiday by the sea.
Sozopol

Sozopol combines a beach holiday with the atmosphere of an old seaside town. It has a historic centre, restaurants, art spaces and several beaches with different characteristics.
- Central Beach – located near the town centre and suitable for those who value cafés, shops and a short walk from their accommodation to the sea.
- Harmani – a more spacious urban beach with developed infrastructure. It received the Blue Flag in 2026.
- Golden Fish – a beach north of Sozopol, particularly interesting for those who want to combine the sea with a more natural setting and water sports.
Burgas is approximately 30 km from Sozopol, making the town convenient for trips after flying into Burgas Airport. At the same time, the resort differs noticeably from Sunny Beach in atmosphere: there is more historic urban development and more independent small-scale accommodation.
Beach equipment prices vary by section. In 2026, the price is €3.58 for an umbrella and €3.58 for a sun lounger, while at Harmani each item costs €4.
Smokinya

Smokinya is located near Sozopol and is best known for its campsites, relaxed atmosphere and proximity to other beaches on the southern coast. It is an option for those who prefer a tent or campsite to a large hotel complex.
The beach attracts young people and visitors looking for a more informal holiday. Naturism is common in some sections. Families with small children may prefer more sheltered beaches with a gently sloping entrance, as conditions on the open coast can change depending on the waves.
Pomorie

Pomorie is approximately 20 km from Burgas and is conveniently located for a holiday if you are flying into Burgas Airport. The resort stretches along a narrow peninsula, so the sea is within easy reach from almost every part of the town.
The Pomorie coastline is interesting for its variety of beaches. Within the town, you will find sections with light and darker sand, while Pomorie Lake is nearby and known for its natural and balneological resources.
On Pomorie Central Beach, an umbrella and a sun lounger each cost €1.84. This is one of the lowest prices among the resorts covered in the article.
Pomorie Sandspit

The Pomorie Sandspit separates Pomorie Lake from the Black Sea and is primarily interesting for its natural landscape. There is less urban infrastructure here than on the beaches in Pomorie itself. The beach is unguarded.
The sandspit is worth visiting for its open space, natural surroundings and more secluded atmosphere. This is not the beach to choose if you are looking for a wide selection of cafés, entertainment and services directly by the water.
Shkorpilovtsi

Shkorpilovtsi is one of the most spacious beach areas on the northern part of the Bulgarian coast. Its main advantage is not the number of entertainment options but the combination of sea, sand, forest and a large open stretch of coastline.
There are small hotels, guesthouses, apartments and campsites. The resort is suitable for travellers who do not need large hotel complexes or a busy nightlife.
Shkorpilovtsi is 40 km south of Varna. Because the beach is so extensive, the density of development and the number of visitors vary considerably between different sections.
Krapets

Krapets is located in north-eastern Bulgaria near the Romanian border. It is one of the options for those looking for a less developed coastline and a long natural beach.
The official Bulgarian tourism portal describes the beach near Krapets as an almost seven-kilometre stretch extending towards Durankulak. Sand dunes have been preserved here, and the coastline is markedly different from the major resorts around Varna and Burgas.
Krapets is particularly interesting for independent travellers and camping enthusiasts. For infrastructure and a large choice of entertainment, it is better to visit the major resorts; Krapets is the place to come for nature and open space.
Bolata

Bolata is a small sandy bay on the northern coast, known for its unusual combination of the sea, red cliffs and an almost enclosed shoreline. It is more of a natural attraction with a beach than a full-scale resort.
The bay is interesting for those who want to see a different side of the Bulgarian coastline. There is no dense resort development around it, so infrastructure is considerably more limited than in Albena, Golden Sands or Sunny Beach.
Bolata is located in the Kavarna area. Allow time not only for swimming but also for a walk around the surrounding area and an opportunity to explore the natural landscape.
Arkutino

Arkutino is located on the southern coast near Primorsko, close to natural areas and dunes. The area is known for its combination of a long sandy beach, forest and nature reserve.
Arkutino Lagoon and the Ropotamo Nature Reserve are nearby. One of the characteristic features of the area is the sea daffodil, which grows among the dunes.
Arkutino is interesting for those who want to combine a beach holiday with walks in nature. In 2026, the beach received the Blue Flag, making it a rare example of a naturally oriented destination that also participates in an international environmental programme.
At the same time, prices here are considerably higher than on some urban beaches – €15 for an umbrella and €15 for a sun lounger.
Sinemorets

Sinemorets is a small resort in the far south of Bulgaria, near the Turkish border. Its main advantage is its natural surroundings: forests, cliffs, the Veleka estuary and several beaches with different characteristics.
- Ustieto – a beach at the mouth of the Veleka, known for its beautiful natural surroundings and views of the point where the river meets the sea.
- Lipite – a more secluded natural beach surrounded by forest and cliffs.
- Silistar – a picturesque beach south of Sinemorets. It is located in a natural area and is suitable for those looking for a quieter type of holiday.
- Butamyata – the main beach directly beside the resort, with a sandy shoreline and developed infrastructure.
Sinemorets is better chosen for its nature rather than for a large number of entertainment options. It is convenient for combining a beach holiday with walks and trips along the southern coast.
St. Constantine and Elena

St. Constantine and Elena is the oldest seaside resort in Bulgaria and is located near Varna. It is characterised by small bays, green areas and a combination of beach holidays with balneological facilities.
The coastline is varied, with sandy sections, rocky areas and small bays. The resort is therefore better considered as a collection of several beaches rather than one large sandy coastline.
There are hotels, restaurants, SPA facilities and balneological complexes nearby. The resort is suitable for those who want to combine the sea with treatments and a relaxing holiday without travelling far from Varna.
Sunny Day

Sunny Day is located next to St. Constantine and Elena and is a small resort complex with a beach in a sheltered bay. There is less urban bustle here than at the larger resorts.
The beach received the Blue Flag in 2026. There are hotels, swimming pools, restaurants and opportunities for water sports nearby.
The main feature of Sunny Day is the combination of a beach holiday and SPA facilities. The resort is located close to Varna, making it convenient for travellers who do not want a long transfer after arriving at the airport.
Elenite

Elenite is a resort complex east of Sunny Beach, located at the foot of the Balkan Mountains. Here, a sandy beach is combined with green slopes and hotel development.
The resort is primarily designed for organised holidays in hotel complexes. There are swimming pools, restaurants, sports facilities and family entertainment.
Elenite is suitable for those who prefer to spend most of their holiday within the resort. If historic towns, independent trips and a large choice of restaurants outside the hotel complex are important to you, Nessebar, Sozopol or other more urban destinations may be more suitable.
How much do umbrellas and sun loungers cost on Bulgarian beaches?
There is no single price for the entire coastline. The Ministry of Tourism publishes an interactive price map, and the data are updated after beach inspections. Therefore, prices should be considered a guide for a particular section rather than a general resort-wide tariff.

When is the best time to visit Bulgaria’s sandy beaches?
The main beach season falls during the summer months. July and August are suitable for those who want the warmest sea and fully operational resort infrastructure. During this period, the most popular beaches also experience the highest tourist demand.
June is usually quieter, but the water can be cooler. In September, air temperatures become milder, the major resorts are less crowded and some tourist infrastructure continues to operate. However, towards the end of the season, some seasonal establishments and entertainment options gradually close.
If nature and walks are more important to you than having the maximum number of entertainment options open, the season for Krapets, Bolata, Arkutino, Shkorpilovtsi and Sinemorets can be considered longer than that of the large resort complexes.
Bulgarian beaches near the airports
For a trip with a short transfer, it is most convenient to choose resorts around the two international airports on the coast.
- Burgas Airport – convenient for Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Ravda, Pomorie, Sozopol, Duni, Primorsko and the southern coast.
- Varna Airport – convenient for Golden Sands, Albena, Kranevo, St. Constantine and Elena, Sunny Day, Obzor and the northern part of the coast.
For remote natural beaches, especially in the north-east and far south, transfers take noticeably longer. However, this is where some of the most interesting stretches of coastline can be found for those looking for something beyond a standard resort holiday.
Which sandy beaches in Bulgaria should you choose for different types of holidays?
- For holidays with young children: Albena, Obzor, Kranevo, Ravda, selected sections of Sunny Beach and Nessebar.
- For plenty of entertainment: Sunny Beach and Golden Sands.
- For combining a beach holiday with sightseeing: Nessebar and Sozopol.
- For a relaxed resort holiday: Albena, Duni, Kranevo, Elenite.
